Driving Tips for Kanagawa
Yokosuka IC is the primary access for the Naval Base. From the IC, follow signs to Route 16 toward Yokosuka city center and the main gate.
For NAF Atsugi, exit at Atsugi IC on Tomei Expressway. Follow Route 129 south for about 10 minutes to reach the base gates.
Camp Zama is best accessed from Ken-O Expressway at Sagamihara-Aikawa IC, or from Tomei at Atsugi IC heading north on Route 129.
The Yokohama-Yokosuka Road is a mountain expressway with tight curves and tunnels. Speed limit is 70-80 km/h. Watch for sudden braking in tunnels.
Rush hour on Tomei between Atsugi IC and Tokyo IC (7-9 AM, 5-8 PM) is among Japan's worst congestion. Allow double the normal time.
To reach Yokota Air Base from Kanagawa without going through Tokyo, use Ken-O Expressway (Sagamihara-Aikawa IC → Hachioji JCT → Iruma IC).
Kamakura and Enoshima are popular but extremely congested on weekends and holidays. Use Zushi IC (Yokohama-Yokosuka Road) for easiest access.
