Understanding ETC Devices
To use ETC on Japan's expressways, you need two components: an ETC card (which JapanETCcard provides) and an On-Board Unit (OBU) installed in your vehicle. The OBU must be properly registered and set up for your specific vehicle.
Key Compliance Points
- ✓Vehicle-Specific Registration: Each OBU must be registered to a specific vehicle. The registration includes your vehicle's class, license plate, and other details.
- ✓Professional Setup Required: OBUs must be "set up" (セットアップ) by authorized dealers. This cannot be done at home.
- ✓Vehicle Change = Re-setup: If you change vehicles, the OBU must be re-registered to the new vehicle.
- ✓Card Compatibility: All ETC cards work with all ETC-compatible OBUs. Your JapanETCcard will work in any properly set up OBU.

Getting an OBU for Your Vehicle
Option 1: Purchase at Auto Stores
Stores like Autobacs and Yellow Hat sell OBUs and offer setup services. Prices vary from ¥5,000-¥30,000 depending on features.
Option 2: Car Dealerships
Many vehicles come with OBUs pre-installed, especially newer models. Dealerships can also install and set up OBUs.
Option 3: Used Vehicles
If buying a used car with an existing OBU, you'll need to have it re-setup for your registration. The previous owner's setup is voided.

To set up an OBU, you'll need:
