Vehicle Classification
How vehicles are classified on Japan's expressways and how it affects your toll charges.
Why Vehicle Class Matters
Japanese expressway tolls are calculated based on your vehicle's classification. Larger vehicles pay higher tolls, while light vehicles (kei cars) get discounted rates.
Important: Your vehicle class is registered in your OBU setup. Using an incorrect class can result in fines or toll gate errors.
Vehicle Classes & Toll Rates
| Class | Type | Rate |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Light Vehicles (軽自動車) | 0.8x |
| 2 | Standard Vehicles (普通車) | 1.0x (Base) |
| 3 | Medium Vehicles (中型車) | 1.2x |
| 4 | Large Vehicles (大型車) | 1.65x |
| 5 | Extra Large (特大車) | 2.75x |
How Classification is Determined
Vehicle classification is based on several factors from your Shaken (vehicle inspection certificate):
Physical Dimensions
- • Length (全長)
- • Width (全幅)
- • Height (全高)
Technical Specs
- • Engine displacement (排気量)
- • Number of axles
- • Maximum loading capacity
Light Vehicle (Kei Car) Benefits
20% Discount on Tolls!
Light vehicles (軽自動車) with yellow plates pay only 80% of standard vehicle rates.
Kei Car Specifications:
- • Length: Max 3.4m
- • Width: Max 1.48m
- • Height: Max 2.0m
- • Engine: Max 660cc
Motorcycles
Motorcycles can also use ETC! They fall under different categories:
Light Motorcycles (125cc and under)
Cannot use expressways in Japan (except some paid roads)
Standard Motorcycles (Over 125cc)
Pay approximately 80% of light vehicle rate on most expressways
Common Questions
Can I use a light vehicle's ETC card in a standard car?
No. The card is linked to the OBU, which is registered to your specific vehicle. Using a mismatched setup can cause errors.
What if I tow a trailer?
You may be classified as a larger vehicle class when towing. Some toll gates have height sensors that detect trailers.
My car was modified. Do I need to re-register?
If modifications changed your vehicle's dimensions significantly (like a lift kit), you should update your Shaken and potentially re-setup your OBU.
